USPS says delivered, no package: how long to wait and who to call

USPS says delivered and the box is not there. Wait one postal business day, then call the delivery Post Office for the GPS scan point. Day 7 opens a Missing Mail Search, day 15 opens the insurance claim and day 60 closes it.

USPS says delivered, no package: how long to wait and who to call

Wait one postal business day after the delivered scan. Most of these packages show up by the next delivery. If it is still missing, call the Post Office that delivers to that ZIP code, give the tracking number, and ask for the GPS point of the scan. Day 7 from mailing opens a Missing Mail Search. Day 15 opens an insurance claim. Day 60 closes both.

The USPS timeline, day by day

A table of the USPS timeline for a package marked delivered but not received. On the day of the scan the recipient checks the mailbox, porch, doors, garage, parcel locker, front desk and neighbors. One postal business day later, the local Post Office handles a service request through the usps.com Email Us form or a call to the delivery unit. On day 7 from mailing a Missing Mail Search can be opened at missingmail.usps.com. On day 15 from mailing the sender or recipient can file the insurance claim, and Priority Mail Express can be filed from day 7. Day 60 from mailing is the last day to file a claim, while searches stay open to day 365.

USPS publishes these windows on separate pages. Here they are in one table.

The one-business-day wait comes from the USPS Where is my package FAQ. It lists the places to check and says to submit a service request to the local Post Office once more than one postal business day has passed since the delivered scan. The Missing Mail window is on the Missing Mail basics page: searches can be submitted from 7 days after the mailing date up to 365 days. The claim windows are on the Domestic Claims basics page.

Why the scan fires before the box lands

A delivered scan is a button press on a handheld scanner. Carriers sometimes scan a stop before the walk, and the package arrives the next business day. Pirate Ship says a package marked delivered in error will usually be delivered the next business day. The scan also records a GPS point. The local Post Office can read that point and tell you where the carrier was standing, down to about a six-foot radius. If that point is two doors down, the search is over.

The Ship.com guide that prompted this article gives the same first move: skip the national line and reach the local office. On an eBay Community thread on the same problem, one seller called the delivery office within minutes of the scan and had the package back in 15 to 20 minutes. Another reported phones that ring out. Try the phone once, then use the form.

Who to call, and what each one can do

The delivery unit for the destination ZIP code is the only place that can see the carrier's scan location and ask the carrier a question the same day. Find it with the location finder on usps.com. The clerk needs the tracking number and the address.

The national line is 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777). It runs Monday to Friday 8 AM to 8:30 PM ET and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM ET, per the USPS contact page. Representatives see the same tracking you see. They can open a case. They cannot read the GPS point and they cannot submit a Missing Mail Search for you.

The service request is the written version of the phone call. Go to usps.com, Help, then Email Us, pick the package inquiry option, and enter the tracking number and a phone number. It routes to the local office and gives you a case number to quote later.

The Missing Mail Search is a different tool. It asks for both addresses, the mailing date, the tracking number, the container type and a description of the contents. If the package is found, USPS rewraps it and sends it to the address on the form.

The Postal Inspection Service handles theft. If the GPS point is your door and the package was taken after the drop, report it at report.uspis.gov or call 1-877-876-2455. A police report helps an insurance claim, too.

What the claim pays and when

Four stat cards on what a USPS claim pays and when. $100 of insurance is included in the postage for Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Priority Mail Express. A lost-package claim for Priority Mail or Ground Advantage can be filed 15 to 60 days from mailing. USPS says most claim decisions take 5 to 10 days, and complex claims up to 30. A Priority Mail Express money-back refund can be requested 2 to 30 days from mailing.
What the included insurance covers and the days that open and close each request.

Priority Mail and Ground Advantage include up to $100 of insurance for merchandise in the postage. Priority Mail Express includes the same $100. Either the sender or the recipient can file. The claim needs proof of value, such as a sales receipt or paid invoice, and proof of insurance, such as the mailing receipt or the printed label record. USPS says most decisions are communicated within 5 to 10 days, and complex claims can take up to 30. All of this is on the Domestic Claims basics page.

Priority Mail Express has a second route. The postage carries a money-back guarantee, and a refund request for a late or missing Express package can be made 2 to 30 days after mailing, or 30 to 60 days when an extra service was bought with it.

If you are the brand

Do not make the customer run this timeline alone. Reply the same day, name the date you will act, and keep the claim on your side. Our earlier article on the seller playbook for a package marked delivered has the email template and the reship-or-refund rule. This article is the USPS escalation ladder under it.

Two tools help before the scan. If the address was wrong at checkout, USPS Package Intercept can redirect a package that is not yet out for delivery for a $19.45 fee, charged only when the intercept succeeds. For orders above the $100 included coverage, declare value on the label. Our Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail decision rule covers when each service earns the extra cost.

What we do from Remsen Avenue

Every order that leaves 905 Remsen Ave in Brooklyn carries its live carrier status and an estimated delivery date in the platform, and one click opens the carrier's own tracking page. When a customer writes in, your support team and ours look at the same screen. Loss and damage claims are filed from the platform with a status timeline, so the day-15 and day-60 windows are tracked for you. Orders in by the 3:30pm ET cutoff ship the same day, so the mailing date, and every window counted from it, starts a day earlier.

See the tracking your customers get, how we route USPS labels, and the carriers we run alongside USPS when a lane keeps losing packages.
