Local delivery
Same-day delivery in NYC for Shopify brands: how it works with our own drivers
Order by 3:30pm ET and it is delivered in the five boroughs the same day on our own trucks. What Shopify's local delivery setting can and cannot do, what Uber Direct, DoorDash Drive and a courier cost per drop, and the five steps from a Shopify order to a timestamped doorstep photo.

Yes, a Shopify brand can offer true same-day delivery in New York City with a real cutoff. The simplest way is a warehouse inside the city that runs its own vans. At BoxHero, an order placed by 3:30pm ET ships the same day to any of the five boroughs on our own trucks from 905 Remsen Ave in Brooklyn. New Jersey and Westchester go out on the next morning run. Here is how it works, what the other routes cost, and what to put on your product page.
Why Shopify alone cannot do it

Shopify has a built-in local delivery method. You turn it on under Settings, then Shipping and delivery. You can define a zone by radius, up to 100 miles, or by a list of postal codes, with up to 10 zones per location and up to three extra price rules per zone (Shopify Help Center). Each zone gets its own delivery price and an optional minimum order.
What it lacks is a cutoff clock. There is no setting that says orders after 3:30pm move to tomorrow. It also has no driver. Shopify's own page says you, your staff, or a third-party service make the deliveries. That gap is the whole question in the Shopify Community thread that asked for a same-day option with a cutoff for one location. The two apps suggested in reply were a pickup scheduler and a subscription tool. Neither one dispatches a van.
Four ways to get a package across the city today
| Option | What you pay per delivery | Who drives | Cutoff and proof |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify local delivery, you deliver | Your time and a vehicle | You or your staff | No cutoff setting. You state it in your copy and keep it yourself. |
| Uber Direct through the Shopify app | $10.00 under 5 routed miles, plus a $5.00 New York City surcharge. $20.00 at 17 to 20 miles. | Uber couriers | On demand. If no one is home, the return trip costs the full delivery charge again. |
| DoorDash Drive on-demand | $9.75 within 5 miles, then $0.75 a mile up to 15 miles | Dashers | On demand. A return to pickup costs 60% of the original fee. |
| NYC courier company | $125 to $300 a job for most same-day runs | A courier | Booked per run, priced by distance and vehicle. |
| 3PL with its own vans (BoxHero) | A flat local rate quoted with your fulfillment | Our drivers | 3:30pm ET. Scan and photo at the door, written back to your store. |
The Uber Direct figures come from the Uber Direct Shopify order form, last updated November 25, 2025. The DoorDash figures are on the DoorDash Drive pricing page, which also takes $2.75 off the base rate if you pass the customer's full tip to the Dasher. The courier range is from a 2026 NYC courier rate guide, which puts the citywide market at $2 to $5 a mile with $50 to $200 minimums.
The on-demand apps are built for a restaurant that hands a bag to a driver at the counter. For an ecommerce brand the hard part is upstream. Someone still has to pick the order, pack it, print the label and meet the courier. If your stock sits in a 3PL in Pennsylvania, no app in Manhattan can help. The package is already a carrier transit away.
How it works at BoxHero, step by step
- The order lands from Shopify. Any address inside the five boroughs is flagged at pick for our trucks instead of a national carrier. You do not sort anything.
- It is picked and packed on the same floor as every other order. Same team, same 99.9% pick accuracy, same packaging rules you set.
- It goes onto the van from that floor. There is no line haul and no sortation hub.
- The driver scans the parcel at the door and photographs the drop. The photo is timestamped to the minute and attached to the order in your dashboard.
- The status writes back to your store. The tracking page and the delivery notification carry your branding.
If no one is home, the driver follows the rule you set: leave the parcel in a safe spot with a photo, or bring it back and retry. The most common seller dispute is a package marked delivered that the customer says never arrived. A doorstep photo with a timestamp settles most of those in a minute.

What to put in Shopify and on the product page
Set up Shopify's local delivery method with one zone covering the five boroughs, either by radius from Brooklyn or by the borough postal codes. Give it a price and, if you want, a minimum order. Then write the cutoff into the method name and the product page, for example "Same-day delivery in NYC, order by 3:30pm ET". The warehouse enforces the clock. Shopify just displays it.
Two details from the Shopify help page catch people. Local delivery works with Shop Pay at checkout. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and PayPal do not support it. And the customer's address has to be in the same state as the delivery location when you use a radius, so a New Jersey zone needs its own postal-code list. If you run a second zone for New Jersey and Westchester, label it next-business-day and let the morning run out of Brooklyn handle it.
When same-day is worth paying for
Same-day earns its keep on gifts, food and drink, replacement parts, and anything with a high average order value where a missed date costs you the customer. A regional carrier can get a Brooklyn order to Queens tomorrow. Only a van in the building can get it there tonight.
It is not worth much if only a handful of your orders land in the metro. A van route needs stops to fill it. We set no hard floor on local delivery, and the honest rule is that it works best when enough of your orders are inside the city to make a route. The rest of your orders go out the same day through rate shopping across 12+ carriers, with postage passed through at cost.
If you are still deciding whether to hand off fulfillment at all, start with the five numbers that decide it. If you already ship from a 3PL outside the city, the question is simpler: can they deliver in Brooklyn tonight? Ours can.
