Amazon MCF vs a 3PL in 2026, after the fee increase and the fuel surcharge
Amazon MCF fees rose in January 2026, picked up a 3.5% surcharge in May and sit at peak rates until January 14. What a single-unit order costs now, where a 3PL prices differently, and a decision table for Shopify brands.

Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment costs more in 2026 than it did a year ago. Fees rose by an average of $0.30 a unit in January, a 3.5% fuel surcharge landed on MCF orders in May, and peak rates run from October 15 to January 14. MCF still wins for a brand that already holds FBA stock and ships one light unit per order. A 3PL wins once orders carry more than one unit, need your own packaging, or go to Walmart. Here is the math.
What changed in MCF fees this year

Three changes stacked up. In October 2025 Amazon announced that MCF fulfillment fees would rise by an average of $0.30 per unit, against $0.08 for FBA (Supply Chain Dive). The new rates took effect on January 15, 2026. Easyship puts the rise for most single-unit orders at $0.35 to $0.41, with no increase on standard-size orders of three or more units (Easyship).
Then came the surcharge. Amazon added a 3.5% surcharge on fulfillment fees and called it temporary. It started on US FBA orders on April 17, 2026 and on MCF and Buy with Prime orders on May 2, 2026, with no end date (PPC Land). Amazon's 2026 peak rate card lists it as a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on US MCF fulfillment fees (Amazon).
Third, peak. From October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027 every MCF order pays the holiday rate. A single-unit small standard order under 4 oz is $7.53 at the peak rate, against $7.34 from January 15 to October 14 (Amazon peak card, AMZ Prep). Storage on the same card is $0.78 per cubic foot a month for standard-size items from January to September and $2.40 from October to December. For the carrier side of peak, see our 2026 peak surcharge table.
What a single-unit order costs at MCF right now
Take the peak rate and add 3.5%. Four common weight tiers, standard delivery, one unit per order:
| Size and weight | Jan 15 to Oct 14 rate | Peak rate | Peak rate plus 3.5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard, 4 oz or less | $7.34 | $7.53 | $7.79 |
| Small standard, 12 to 16 oz | $8.66 | $8.88 | $9.19 |
| Large standard, 1 to 2 lb | $10.64 | $10.97 | $11.35 |
| Large standard, 2 to 3 lb | $11.75 | $12.16 | $12.59 |
Those fees include postage. That is the appeal of MCF: one fee, Amazon's network, no label to rate shop. Multi-unit orders are cheaper per unit. A four-unit order of 4 oz items is $3.83 a unit at the peak rate, so $15.32 for the box before the surcharge. Standard delivery is three business days and expedited is two (Easyship). The extras are on the same card. Lithium batteries add $0.11 a unit. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico carry a 100% surcharge on standard-size items. Blocking Amazon Logistics as the carrier normally costs 5%, waived on MCF orders through January 14, 2027. A return on a small standard item under 4 oz is $3.22 a unit.
Where a 3PL prices differently
A 3PL splits the fee into parts you can see. You pay a pick and pack rate per order, a smaller rate per additional unit, a flat storage charge, and postage. At BoxHero postage is passed through at the carrier's rate with no markup, and every label is rate shopped across 12+ carriers. There are no receiving fees and no monthly minimums. The first 10 returns a month are included, and each one after that is $2 with inspection included, against $3.22 a unit at MCF for the lightest item.
The split matters because a separate postage line is one you can change. A 12 oz order two zones away can ship on a regional carrier for less than a national one, and that saving shows up on your invoice. Inside a flat MCF fee you never see it. Our cost per order article walks through a full 3PL invoice, eleven hidden 3PL fees lists the lines to check on any quote, and the five numbers that decide 3PL or in-house apply here too.
MCF or a 3PL: the decision table

| Your situation | MCF | 3PL |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon is the main channel and stock already sits in FBA | One inventory pool, free Shopify app, no second receiving | A second location to stock and count |
| Orders average more than one unit | Per-unit fees fall with unit count, but every unit carries a fee | One base rate plus a small add per extra unit |
| Branded boxes, inserts, kits or subscription bundles | Unbranded box only | Your packaging, your inserts, kitting on request |
| Walmart Marketplace orders | Allowed with a neutral box and Amazon Logistics blocked (Supply Chain Dive) | No channel rules to manage |
| Fourth-quarter storage | $2.40 per cubic foot from October to December | Flat monthly rate, no long-term storage surcharge at BoxHero |
| Returns | $3.22 a unit for the lightest tier | First 10 a month included, then $2 each, inspected and photographed |
Amazon's free Multichannel Fulfillment app lives in Shopify admin and routes US orders automatically. It cannot block Amazon Logistics on its own, so Walmart sellers need a third-party connector (Amazon).
Three cases, decided
- Amazon-first brand, Shopify at 15% of orders, one unit per order, under 1 lb. Stay on MCF. The $7.79 all-in peak fee is hard to beat for a single light unit, and you avoid stocking a second building.
- Shopify-first brand, two units per order on average, branded mailer. Move to a 3PL. MCF cannot ship your mailer, and two 12 oz units at the peak rate cost $11.78 before the surcharge. A base rate plus one add-on unit plus rate-shopped postage usually lands lower, and you see each line.
- Brand selling on Shopify, Walmart and TikTok Shop. Use a 3PL. Walmart needs neutral boxes and a blocked carrier, TikTok Shop has its own dispatch clock, and one warehouse running every channel from one pool is simpler than managing exceptions inside Amazon's rules. Amazon's exit from FBA prep pushes the same way; see your three options after Amazon ended FBA prep.
How to run the numbers for your store
- Export 90 days of orders. Note units per order and the weight tier of your top ten SKUs.
- Price them off Amazon's peak card and add 3.5%. Add storage at $2.40 per cubic foot for October to December.
- Get a 3PL quote on the same orders. Ask for base rate, per-unit add, storage and the postage rule. Our pricing page lists what we include and what we never charge.
- Add returns at your real return rate. At 5% on 1,000 orders that is 50 returns: $161 at MCF for the lightest tier, $80 at BoxHero.
- Check what you cannot price: packaging, channels, batteries, remote ZIPs.
