A pallet has two limits. Light cartons fill the space first. Heavy cartons hit the weight limit with room to spare.
The weight limit here includes the pallet, so the empty pallet weight comes off it first. Change any limit and the rules switch to your own.
Space is how many cartons fit on one layer times how many layers fit under the height limit. Weight is how many cartons the weight limit can carry once the pallet itself is taken off. The pallet holds the smaller of the two numbers.
Max cartons = the lower of (per layer × layers) and ((weight limit − pallet) ÷ carton weight)
Cartons 18 × 14 × 12 in at 25 lb on a 48 × 40 pallet with a 72 in limit fit 6 per layer and 5 layers high. That is 30 cartons at 790 lb, so space runs out first. The same cartons at 60 lb stop at 24, because 24 of them plus the pallet already reach 1,500 lb.
Amazon's FBA pallet requirements are commonly published as 48 × 40 in wood pallets, no taller than 72 in including the pallet, and no heavier than 1,500 lb. Requirements change, so confirm them in Seller Central before you book. The Amazon preset in the calculator uses these numbers.
